Flying First Class isn’t just about the seat you travel in, it’s about the whole experience from start to finish. While Business Class offers perks such as fast-track baggage, lie-flat seats and premium lounge access, First Class takes things that little bit further. If you want the ultimate VIP treatment, flying First will make you feel completely pampered and taken care of at every step of the way.
If you feel like getting that extra care and attention, (and who wouldn’t?) the following perks just might be worth upgrading for:
Access to the First Class Lounge
Travelling with a First Class ticket will allow access to premium lounges, and at some airports you’ll even find dedicated First Class lounges, which are separate from Business Class. The British Airways Galleries First lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5 features ‘The Concorde Room’ – an elegant space with luxurious furniture, chandeliers, cabanas, private booths and full waiter service.
Limousine Service
Airlines such as Emirates and Etihad offer chauffeur-driven cars to whisk you from your home or office to the airport in order to catch your flight. And then when you arrive at your destination, there’ll be a luxury vehicle ready to drop you off at your hotel or chosen destination too. If you have a connection, some airlines will even drop you right onto the tarmac in order to catch your connecting flight!
Skip the queues
From dedicated check-in desks to fast-track security and priority baggage, flying First Class allows you to bypass the airport queues, ensuring your journey is as smooth and hassle-free as possible. This means you won’t have to stand in line at check-in or wait for your bags at the baggage carousel when you arrive at the other end.
Extra Baggage
Tired of trying to fit everything into one suitcase? When you fly First you’ll usually have a much larger baggage allowance, meaning you have plenty of room for souvenirs, clothes or anything else you want to bring with you. For instance, if you fly First Class with British Airways, you’ll be allowed to travel with one cabin bag plus a laptop bag, as well as three suitcases in the hold. You can also take advantage of their First Luggage service, which will have them collected from your home and delivered to your destination. That means you can arrive at the airport luggage-free, feeling relaxed and refreshed ready for your trip.
Suites & Showers in the Sky
Business Class usually features a functional, lie-flat seat, whilst First Class tends to offer much more space. On some airlines you may even be treated to your very own private bedroom in the sky. Etihad’s First Apartments feature a large leather armchair and separate bed measuring 6 feet and 10 inches, plus there’s still space to walk around after you close the privacy doors. Vanity units are quite common in international First Class suites, so you can check how you look in the mirror without having to leave your seat. Onboard the Emirates A380, First Class guests can take a shower at 35,000 feet in their onboard shower spas, which are stocked with luxury toiletries.
5-star Dining
In First Class the cuisine will be the best of the best, and usually you’ll be presented with a different menu and tableware to Economy or Business. This is high-end dining in the sky; think seven-course tasting menus, lobster, fine wines, top-quality champagne and meals made-to-order, served on fine china with opulent silverware. Etihad even has its own fully-qualified, in-flight chefs, who will use their culinary expertise to create an individual dining experience tailored just for you.
Pyjamas and Amenity Kits
Compared to Business Class kits, the First Class amenity kits are usually that little bit more luxurious, with an upgraded bag and even more skincare products inside. Pyjamas are also another luxury you tend to receive in First, so you can slip into something more comfortable and get a proper night’s sleep. Singapore Airlines First Class customers receive luxurious toiletries and perfumes by Salvatore Ferragamo, along with a stylish, Givenchy sleeper suit and suede slippers.
