In February Singapore Airlines announced it would be introducing new Premium Economy cabins after encouraging social media followers to complete an Instagram puzzle to uncover the new experience.
As part of an $80 million investment, the new Premium Economy will be available on the airline’s A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs, as well as the airline’s future Airbus A350s, which are set to make their debut in the latter half of 2015.
Singapore Airlines’ first A380 Premium Economy flight will take off on August 9, 2015 to Sydney, while the first Boeing 777-300ER to feature the new product will take off on August 12th (also to Sydney).
After that, Premium Economy will be rolled out to the rest of the world, with destinations including Hong Kong, London, Beijing, Shanghai, Frankfurt, Paris, Delhi, Mumbai, Auckland, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Munich, Manchester, Frankfurt, New York, Zurich, Dubai, Seoul and San Francisco.
The Cabin
The double-decker A380 will be fitted with 36 premium economy seats, situated on the lower deck sandwiched between First Class and Economy. On the long-range Boeing 777-300ER there’ll be 28 seats behind Business Class and in front of Economy. On both aircraft they’ll be arranged in a 2-4-2 layout. Premium Economy promises increased personal space, with more width, more pitch and a wide centre console.
The Seat
Seats have been crafted for Singapore Airlines by JPA Design and manufactured by seat-makers Zodiac Aerospace and ZIM.
Arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration, the leather-clad seats offer greater width than standard Economy Class seats, measuring between 18.5” and 19.5” wide, with a calf and foot rest built into the seat. There’s a cubby hole in the central console so all your items are in reach, as well as a cup and water bottle holder in between each seat, making it easier to stay hydrated. You can sit back and lounge more comfortably thanks to a more generous 8” seat recline and there’s extra room for your legs with a 38” seat pitch. Read your favourite book with the help of a warm-toned, fully adjustable reading light, or put your laptop on the adjustable tray table that folds out from the central console.
Connectivity
If you need to give your gadgets some juice, there’s a plug socket by your feet for charging laptops and a USB port up by your armrest in the central console for charging mobile phones and iPads. There’s also Wi-Fi throughout the cabin, so you can keep in touch with colleagues and friends on the ground.
Inflight Entertainment
On the back of each seat there’s a large 13.3” full HD, touchscreen monitor for the ultimate viewing experience. Using a touchscreen handset, you can explore more than 1,000 on-demand options on the KrisWorld in-flight system and enjoy uninterrupted entertainment with noise-cancelling headphones. Beneath the monitor there’s an in-built personal storage area to keep your documents, laptop and personal gadgets handy.
Dining
As a Premium Economy passenger you also benefit from tastier food, with the option to Pre-order from the Singapore Airlines ‘Book the Cook’ menu before you fly or pick from three choices of main courses onboard. This is all served with a selection of breads and your choice of drink. To make the experience that bit more special, champagne is available throughout the flight, so you can kick off your trip the right way with a flute or two.
Privileges
At the airport you benefit from priority check-in, boarding and baggage handling and with KrisFlyer, you can earn 110% of the actual miles flown every time you fly. You’ll also have a slightly larger baggage allowance of 35kg, compared to the standard 30kg in Economy.
Premium Economy will be available on 777-300ER flights to London Heathrow from September 2nd.
