Things to do in Huntsville
Taking business class flights to Huntsville opens the door a range of exciting experiences in this dynamic city. Dating back to 1805, Huntsville began as a quiet cotton town and remained as such for over 100 years. It was only in the 1950’s that the city rose to prominence when the US Army established the now famous Redstone Arsenal in close proximity to the town. This was followed closely by the opening of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Centre, thereby solidifying Huntsville’s legacy as being a key player in the strategic defence and aerospace industry. To this day, this exciting heritage is kept alive through a number of engaging museums and exhibits which document the city’s history, and the critical role it played during the space race.
The US Space & Rocket Centre Museum
Voted Alabama’s number one tourist attraction, this enormous collection of space-age memorabilia appeals to all ages – including the young at heart! 2008 saw the museum undergo significant refurbishment and expansion, including the opening of the multi-million dollar Davidson Centre. Highlights include a genuine Saturn V rocket which was built as part of the Apollo program yet never launched, a life-size reconstruction of the Space Shuttle and a number of fascinating artefacts from the build-up to the moon landing. Entrance costs just $20 for Adults and $15 for Children over the age of 6.
Along with the museum’s own collection of some 2,500 pieces, this excellent museum hosts regular regional and national exhibits. Set in the beautiful grounds of Big Spring Park, the museum and it’s excellent café and terrace is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Admission is $7, with discounts available for youths, seniors and the military.
Located between the city centre and the International Airport, the beautiful Botanic Gardens make an excellent stop off for guests travelling to the city on business class flights to Huntsville. Set across some 110 acres and boasting a delightful array of woodland, ponds and rolling pastures, the gardens are the perfect place to escape the bustle of the city and unwind during your visit. The Impressive Butterfly House is also well worth a visit and is included in the $10 entrance fee.
