British Airways is now flying to Lima in Peru. The airline launched its new service from Gatwick to Peru on May 4th, commencing a three-times weekly service. Passengers were greeted by 11 month-old alpacas at Gatwick’s North Terminal prior to boarding the inaugural flight.
In celebration of the new route, customers flying between these two cities will be able to savour a special menu created by award-winning Peruvian chef, restaurateur and author Martin Morales, from May 4 until June 4.
Martin, who is the executive chef at Ceviche Soho, Ceviche Old St and Andina restaurants in London, has created courses which blend authentic South American flavours alongside traditional cooking techniques. Dishes being served in-flight include ‘causa de camaron’; mashed yellow potatoes, layered fresh prawns and Amarillo chilli, and ‘bistec escabechado’; grilled soy and cumin marinated beef fillet with pickled tomato, onion salsa and sweet corn puree.
Business Class customers flying in the Club World cabin will also be offered a traditional pisco sour cocktail, made with pisco brandy, lemon juice and egg whites.
Chef Morales said it has been a fascinating challenge to take restaurant cooking into a format that works at 35,000 feet and a privilege to work on the launch of a new service: “Peruvian food is one of the most exciting and cutting edge cuisines in the world as a result of its wide variety of flavours, influences and ingredients so it’s fantastic that British Airways customers will now be able to enjoy this incredibly diverse cuisine whilst in the air.”
During the Summer months the three flights will depart on Wednesday, from Gatwick at 13:10, arriving in Lima at 19:45; while on Friday and Sunday, flights will depart Gatwick at 11:55 and arrive in Lima at 18:30.
From October 30, 2016, the twice-weekly winter flights will depart on Wednesday and Sunday, leaving Gatwick at 10:15 on a Tuesday and landing in Lima at 17:55.
The flight is operated by a Boeing 777-200 aircraft configured with 48 ‘Club World’ Business Class seats, 24 ‘World Traveller Plus’ Premium Economy seats and 203 ‘World Traveller’ Economy Class seats.
With the new route, British Airways’ customers are closer to the ancient Inca Trail than ever before. Lynne Embleton, British Airways’ managing director at Gatwick said: “With the world-famous Inca Trail and the incredible citadel of Machu Picchu, there’s nowhere quite like Peru. Its rich cultural heritage makes it one of the most popular places in South America to visit and explore.
“It is great to be the only airline to offer direct services between London and Peru. Lima is a fantastic gateway to some of the most dramatic places to visit in South America and will also provide a new link for British business seeking to invest in Peru’s growing market.”
