British Airways has announced it will start using the Airbus A380 superjumbo on its daily service between London Heathrow and Chicago O’Hare Airport. The aircraft will replace the current Boeing 747 being utilised on the route from May 8th 2018, becoming the first regular A380 flight out of Chicago.
There should be no increase in fare on the route, just increased comfort and luxury for passengers travelling between London and the Windy City. BA’s A380 seats up to 469 passengers in four cabins across two decks, with 14 First Class seats on the lower deck and 97 Business Class seats spread across the upper and lower decks. The introduction of the A380 will increase capacity on the route by 20%.
“Customers love our Airbus A380 with its refreshed cabins, enhanced entertainment system and improved quality air,” said Simon Brooks, British Airways’ Senior Vice President Sales, North America.
“We’re delighted to be the first airline to offer regularly scheduled service on the A380 between Chicago and London. For those traveling for business to London or customers heading to Europe on vacation, this is an exceptional start to their travels.”
Chicago has had a runway big enough to handle the A380 since 2013 but lacked a gate that would fit it. In order to accommodate an increased number of wide body aircraft, O’Hare is constructing a new runway (which should be completed by 2020) and a new A380-friendly gate at International Terminal 5.
Flight BA295 will depart London Heathrow at 10:50, arriving in Chicago at 13:25pm. The return flight BA294 will depart Chicago at 17:30, touching down in London at 07:20 the next day.
