In mid-July Delta became the first North American airline to take delivery of the Airbus A350, which offers greater fuel-efficiency and a whole host of new customer-friendly features. The first flight of the A350 will take place this autumn on October 30th, when the aircraft enters service on the Detroit-Tokyo Narita route. Currently the aircraft is being put through its paces at the airline’s hub in Atlanta during two months of test flights to give Delta pilots and staff a chance to gain experience with the plane.
What’s most exciting about this new aircraft is the new premium seats called ‘Delta One’, which are totally private suites with full-height doors and sliding privacy dividers between centre suites. For Business Class customers this will be a significant improvement in comfort when flying across the Pacific.
The Delta One suites also feature:
- Dedicated stowage compartments for shoes, headphones and laptops
- Contemporary design featuring premium trim and finishes
- Memory foam-enhanced comfort cushion
- An 18-inch, high resolution in-flight entertainment monitor, among the largest in its class
- A universal power outlet and high-powered USB port at every seat
Full-flat seats have been part of Delta’s Business Class offering for over eight years, but the new Delta One suites will offer more space and privacy than ever before. Each of the 32 suites offers a private, personal experience with a residential feel and premium finishes.
In addition to the new suites, Delta One customers will be treated to chef-curated meals, wine pairings by Delta’s Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson, Westin Heavenly In-Flight Bedding, noise-canceling LSTN headphones, TUMI amenity kits featuring Kiehl’s Since 1851 premium skincare, and in-flight loungewear on select flights. Meals will be served on new Alessi-designed tableware, which includes 86 unique serviceware pieces created by 6 of Alessi’s renowned designers.
The A350 is also the first of Delta’s long-haul aircraft to feature next generation 2Ku internet connectivity, that provides consistent, uninterrupted coverage nearly anywhere in the world, including over oceans. For customers that will mean faster speeds and bandwidth more than 20 times that of Gogo’s ATG technology, allowing for video streaming functionality.
Tickets are now on sale for Delta One suites, which will be available on long-range routes between the US and Asia to begin with. The A350 will replace Delta’s current Boeing 747-400 planes, before being progressively rolled out on Delta’s Boeing 777 fleet. This is the most exciting product update we’ve seen on a North American in a while and Delta has invested billions into the customer experience, so we’re excited to hear feedback when these seats go into service.
