Marmite. It’s a “love it or hate it” food item, but apparently flyers at London City airport can’t live without it.
In a press release, the airport said Marmite is the number one prohibited branded food item confiscated from travellers’ hand luggage, and it’s in the top ten overall for food items. It seems that Brits just can’t face the idea of a breakfast without this yeasty spread, choosing to pack large jars of it in their hand luggage when they go abroad. But due to the 100ml size constraints for carry on bags, their jars of Marmite are regularly confiscated by security officials.
On 31st July (the busiest travel day of the year yet) the airport partnered with Marmite to offer the opportunity for passengers to swap their prohibited jars for a travel-friendly size of 70ml. While the initiative was just a temporary, one day event, Marmite are considering rolling it out nationwide for lovers of Britain’s famous breakfast spread.
A YouGov survey of over 2,000 Brits found that around one in eight people in the UK have had to surrender an item in their hand luggage.
The top 10 most commonly confiscated items at London City Airport are:
- Snow globes
- Jams and spreads
- Toiletries
- Jarred chutneys and pickles
- Olive oils
- Wine
- Spirits
- Marmite
- Nutella chocolate spread
- Furry handcuffs
