Could this be one of the world’s swankiest airport lounges? United has opened its much anticipated United Polaris lounge at San Francisco International Airport, which is split across two levels covering an area of more than 28,000 feet.
The lounge features eight luxurious shower suites with rain showers, five private daybeds outfitted with Saks Fifth Avenue bedding and a private restaurant style dining area with a menu designed by Californian Chef Tritia Gestuvo.
The lounge is open to customers travelling in United Polaris, which is United’s most recent Business Class product. Conveniently located in the International Terminal near Gate G92, the lounge has influences from California in both the design and the menu.
In total there is seating for 440 passengers, with 19 different types of seating for customers to enjoy. Staying connected won’t be an issue, since the lounge features 492 power outlets and 492 USB ports for charging personal electronics.
The lounge is decorate with eight pieces of art by prominent Bay Area artists and customers can order refreshing cocktails inspired by the Bay Area, including the Mai Tai, invented in Oakland in 1944, and the Pisco Punch, which became a huge hit during the California Gold Rush of 1849.
Passengers can enjoy a sit-down meal before their flight in “The Dining Room”, which serves international comfort foods such as a traditional Chinese congee breakfast and hand-cut pappardelle pasta with mushroom ragout, as well as the famous United Polaris Burger.
In addition to the restaurant there is also a more informal bistro-like buffet with a ramen noodle bar in the afternoon and additional unique-to-San Francisco treats that align with the flight schedule and destinations of United and Star Alliance partners.
San Francisco isn’t the only airport to receive a new United Polaris lounge – the United Polaris lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport is expected to open by early June, the lounge at George Bush Intercontinental in Houston this summer and the lounge at Los Angeles International Airport this autumn.
United Polaris Changes
On average, United plans to add one aircraft with the new United Polaris business class seat every 10 days from now through 2020. From July 1st, every seat onboard will automatically come with a cooling gel pillow, so passengers will no longer have to request one from cabin crew.
From May 1st, United will offer customers a pre-arrival dessert in place of the pre-departure chocolate that is currently served. On flights departing the U.S., customers will be served a white chocolate cranberry cookie from Christie Cookie Co., handcrafted from gourmet ingredients in Nashville. Customers on flights that originate outside the U.S. will receive a box of chocolates.
